Elaborate on research interest

Wireless Power Transfer (Charging) technology is emerging from daily consumer electronic applications to being applicable to large commercial industries.

IHPC’s research interest for wireless power (charging) focus in system or modular customization because of two main factors. Firstly, battery is the ultimate load of all electric charging system. There is dozen types of battery chemistry formulated to support different operations or discharge characteristics. This requires optimum charging system to achieve highest DC power delivery efficiency and best overall charging performance. Secondly, battery powered autonomous system always built of variety form factor. Customization of wireless charging modules is indispensable to the market because a universal battery charger that meets all power rating and charging characteristic is in fact impractical in real world.

To meet growing demand in optimum charging system and to enable better compatibility with various battery powered systems, we exerted great effort in optimization and customization. This suits our core R&D capabilities in radio frequency modelling and simulation whereby design optimization and system performance tuning are the general exercise to achieve the objectives aforementioned.

Execution Plan and Collaborator

In order to achieve the objective of this R&D interest, a full set of test setup is required to characterize the wireless power system modules. These modules include power inverter (DCAC converter), couplers, ACDC converter, charger and desired battery modules.

IHPC is capable to perform measurement and tuning exercise for coupler, ACDC converter, charger and partially power inverter. To explore higher quality R&D in inverter and battery analyses, IHPC collaborates with EPGC team from NTU, whereby GaN based inverter technology and intelligent battery emulator facility are available. The EPGC member has R&D expertise in high speed GaN technology, which is one of the key components in wireless battery charging system. Both teams can combine efforts to enable optimization and customization of best in class wireless battery charging system to almost any battery system.

Additionally, IHPC has close relationship with local and overseas SMEs in production sector, e.g. Trilogytech. They are swift and helpful in very low volume, fast order cycle and most importantly willing to accept customized orders and prototyping services without MOQ restriction. IHPC have succeeded various wireless charging projects with these SMEs.

Moreover, teaming with battery research groups in A*STAR and local universities, we can contribute charging performance tests and analyses for batteries with new compounds, difference form factor of batteries fabrication etc.
